CoRec Broomball

CoRec Broomball

MARQUETTE, Mich– On Sunday, March 18th, two teams went head to head in a feisty game of Broomball. ‘Here comes the broom’ vs ‘Monica Lewinksy’ proved to be an entertaining game.

Myself, like many others weren’t too sure what exactly Broomball consisted of. To sum it up, Broomball is essentially a game of hockey. However they are played with “brooms” instead of sticks and a large rubber ball instead of a puck. Players have to be cautious, as they are playing on the ice with regular shoes! There are 6 players on a team, and as this is a CoRec game there has to be 3 girls and 3 boys. There is 1 goalie, 2 defensive players, 2 offensive player and a rover. A rover is able to play anywhere, and is essentially a midfield player, whereas the offensive and defensive players are only allowed in their area of the rink.

With playoffs just 1 week away, the two teams were desperate to take the W and have momentum going into the end of the season. The game started out very one-sided, and after the first 10 minute period the score was 3-0 to “Lewinski”, with Tyler Skufca providing two of those goals. As hard as “Here comes the broom” worked, they just couldn’t bring back the deficit and they fell even further behind after the second period. Skufca seemed to be unstoppable netting another brace, and a lone goal from captain Paiton Plutchak added to Here comes the broom’s woes. They did however manage to pull back a couple of goals but it just wasn’t enough.

The final score really did sum up the game, as Monica Lewinski ran away with the lead, finishing the game at 7-2 with 6 of those goals coming from Skufca himself, who was no doubt the games MVP with agreement coming from both his team and the spectators.

Keep your eyes open for next week’s matchups, as we head into playoffs for basketball and broomball!
