CoRec Broomball

CoRec Broomball

MARQUETTE, Mich– On Sunday, March 18th, two teams went head to head in a feisty game of Broomball. ‘Here comes the broom’ vs ‘Monica Lewinksy’ proved to be an entertaining game.

Myself, like many others weren’t too sure what exactly Broomball consisted of. To sum it up, Broomball is essentially a game of hockey. However they are played with “brooms” instead of sticks and a large rubber ball instead of a puck. Players have to be cautious, as they are playing on the ice with regular shoes! There are 6 players on a team, and as this is a CoRec game there has to be 3 girls and 3 boys. There is 1 goalie, 2 defensive players, 2 offensive player and a rover. A rover is able to play anywhere, and is essentially a midfield player, whereas the offensive and defensive players are only allowed in their area of the rink.

With playoffs just 1 week away, the two teams were desperate to take the W and have momentum going into the end of the season. The game started out very one-sided, and after the first 10 minute period the score was 3-0 to “Lewinski”, with Tyler Skufca providing two of those goals. As hard as “Here comes the broom” worked, they just couldn’t bring back the deficit and they fell even further behind after the second period. Skufca seemed to be unstoppable netting another brace, and a lone goal from captain Paiton Plutchak added to Here comes the broom’s woes. They did however manage to pull back a couple of goals but it just wasn’t enough.

The final score really did sum up the game, as Monica Lewinski ran away with the lead, finishing the game at 7-2 with 6 of those goals coming from Skufca himself, who was no doubt the games MVP with agreement coming from both his team and the spectators.

Keep your eyes open for next week’s matchups, as we head into playoffs for basketball and broomball!

Men’s Class B Basketball

Men’s Class B Basketball

MARQUETTE, Mich– Tuesday, February 27th, a top of the table clash between two teams took place, with both looking to secure their spot and momentum to win the title in the 2018 Men’s Intramural Class B championship . The ‘Rolling Ankles’ took on the ‘Dame of Thrones’. Heading into the game both teams were 4-0 and looking to keep the winning streak alive.

The game was played in two 20 minute halves. The beginning of the first half started, and the ‘Dame of Thrones’ came out with heat, hitting several 3 pointers in succession and having a comfortable lead for the first 10 minutes. However ‘Rolling Ankles’ managed to close the deficit to just one point, and at the end of the first half the score was 28-29 with ‘Dame of Thrones’ just holding on. The second half was even more of a display, as both teams were successfully scoring points at each end however the shift of power had turned as with 5 minutes left ‘Rolling Ankles’ secured a 10 point lead.

With just minutes left on the clock, pressure was getting to both teams as there was a series of misses for each team. “Dame of Thrones’ managed to pull themselves out, taking advantage of Rolling’s lack of consistency to bring the score level at 65-65 with just 1 minute on the clock. However this resurgence wasn’t enough for Thrones, as Rolling ankles did just enough to secure the W and their winning record with a final score of 68-67.

I spoke to the captain of the winning team, Caleb Myers after the game. He believed that Michael Graves was the teams MVP, graves managed to score 16 pts which helped push Rolling Ankles to victory. When asked why he believed the team have been performing so well, Myers responded “Every guy is showing up and playing, our defense works hard and we know how to utilize our attack”.

Keep an eye out for more intramural games!

Battleship H2O Tournament

Battleship H2O Tournament

Battleship H2O lived up to expectation as the PEIF Pool was bursting with competitive and fun games. The aim of the game is simple, that is to sink the other team’s “battleships” (canoes) by filling it up with buckets of water.

The tournament had 10 teams, which were all split into 3 groups with each group playing 2 heats. This was a point based system, with the winner (the team left at the end) receiving 6 points, the runner-up receiving 4 points and the first ship to sink receiving 2 points. At the end of the 2 heats, the top two teams in the group will move onto the semi finals.

The semi finals proved to have some shocks, as the highest scoring team in the group stages “Pizza Dogs” were eliminated from semi final #1 even though they were tipped to be crowned champions. As the tournament went on “When Ship Hits The Fan” gained momentum, coming from losing their first group game to advancing into the finals after knocking out “Jehovah’s Wetnesses” first, then “Pizza Dogs” with ease.

Semi final #2 provided a lot on entertainment, as an alliance between “Nauti + Nice” and “Nauti Boyz” broke down which allowed “Scared Shipless” to take advantage. After a close game, “Scared Shipless” scraped through to the championship game, where they would face “When Ship Hits The Fan”.

The Championship game proved to be a good one, as both teams decided not to hold back and went full steam ahead to try and sink each other. After some near misses from both teams, the game finally came to a conclusion with “When Ship Hits The Fan” being declared this years Battleship H2O champions!

Keep an eye out to make sure you don’t miss anymore fun Intramural games!
